Where is our Site Builder Technology Headed?

This working prototype shows how our unique, patent pending URTE (Universal Rich Text Editing) technology might be incorporated into future products. URTE makes possible truly intuitive features such as integrated text and layout, "click to type"™ and "drag anywhere" ™.  Take a 3 minute test drive of these features to see what we mean...

Integrated Text & Layout

Instantly change the layout as you enter and edit content

  1. First - click here.  You can edit text as you would expect in a word processor.
  2. To move the box around on the screen, hover the mouse over the drop shadow. When the move cursor appears, drag. Put it back when you are finished playing.
  3. To size the box, hover over the dotted line until left/right or up/down cursors appears. Then stretch the box.  Try stretching it from the bottom and notice that content below automatically moves down.

Click to Type™

Click anywhere to create a new box and enter text.

Click in the blank space below (or anywhere there is blank space) just start typing.

Drag Anywhere™

Easily move text into a new box

When you drag and drop text into a box that contains text, it behaves like a word processor and inserts the text where you drop it. When you drag text into blank space it automatically creates a new box.

  1. Select some text with the mouse.
  2. Drag it into the blank space to the right of this box and see a new box  being created.

Generate Liquid Layouts

Create pages that have variable width

Screen widths vary so why create a fixed width site? The short answer is because it is hard to make variable width sites. Not any more. You can now position anything anywhere and still pick a "virtual column" that will stretch to absorb all available space.

  1. Choose the variable column by clicking on any of the text regions (boxes) and then pressing
  2. Press  to pop up a new window with the resulting HTML. Notice what happens as you resize the width of the window.

About URTE

URTE is the first browser based text editor that does not use the built-in editing capability of the browser.   Instead it is written in 100% pure Java Script and completely emulates the editing features you would find in a typical word processor.

But why would you do this when browsers have a built-in editor?  The answer is simple - if you want to build a text editing application of any complexity that is cross-browser compatible, the built-in editor is just not up to the task. URTE on the other hand is designed from the ground up to give you the broadest cross browser compatiblity and the flexibility needed for complex applications.  URTE is a carefully structured Java Script library that separates user interface (e.g. toolbars) from the actual editing code. Parts of it have been incorporated into the current version of the siteZen site builder and more of it will be incorporated into our products in the near future.
